The recent federal indictments involving several NBA players and coaches mark a sobering moment for professional sports. The investigation into alleged illegal sports-betting and rigged poker schemes casts a spotlight on the vulnerabilities athletes and teams face in the modern gambling landscape.
The NBA scandal highlights the deep issues confronting today’s athletes: peer pressure, lack of awareness, mental health struggles, addictions, unhealthy coping strategies, difficulty decompressing after games, and a rapidly changing betting ecosystem that impacts athletes both directly and indirectly.
The scandal renews urgent calls for safeguards and support systems, not just executing rules and laws.

3 Reasons the Gambling Crisis in Sports Isn’t Going Away
(1) LEGAL – While laws and organizational bylaws address infractions, they ignore the underlying causes of the issue.
Golden State Warriors coach Steve Kerr was asked if NBA teams had any safeguards in place to prevent players and coaches from engaging in or aiding illegal gambling. “Our legal counsel, Woody Dixon, came and talked to the team four days ago,” Kerr said. “Every team in the league does this, goes through bulletin points, of everything that is not allowed in this issue. So our players are well aware, all players are well aware of what they’re allowed to do, what they’re not allowed to do.”
Awareness of rules and laws plays a small part in addressing the issues. However, this superficial approach does nothing to reduce the prevalence of gambling, as is evident in the increase of high-profile cases. When the human element is not addressed, behavior remains unchanged.
(2) ORGANIZATIONAL – Too often, sports organizations take a “cover your ass” approach. Front offices scurry to manage the issue to avoid hefty fines, loss of draft picks, and the negative impact on their bottom line.
While this reactive approach may help the organization, who is there to help the athlete and promote genuine change?
(3) MEDIA – Many times, athletes are viewed as entitled. People outside the competitive world of sports judge athletes by stating, “These athletes today make millions of dollars. Why do they gamble? It’s their fault if they go bankrupt or face legal consequences.”
This previous thought process fails to acknowledge the humanness and vulnerability of athletes. Would you tell your best friend that their depression or anxiety disorder is their fault? Of course not! You would be compassionate and offer them your support.

Player Support Services Co-Founder and Director of Sports Psychology stated, “Behind every headline is a human being. When athletes face pressure, temptation, or challenges, our role isn’t to judge—it’s to support, educate, and help them recover with dignity.”
While behaviors should have consequences, a multi-pronged approach is necessary to combat the issue, one that prioritizes the human side of gambling.
At Player Support Services, Ltd., we see gambling as more than just a regulatory or legal issue: we believe it is fundamentally a human concern. The health and well-being of athletes are on the line, affecting their mental health, personal lives, families, performance, careers, and reputations.
PSS is in the game to offer solutions that promote change. From sports psychology services, counseling, and addiction support to awareness education, decision-making, and stress management, we seek to lessen the impact of the betting economy on athletes.
Ethical integrity and mental health resilience are interconnected. When athletes receive proper information, support, and recognition that they are valued as individuals beyond their athletic roles, the likelihood of engaging in harmful gambling behaviors diminishes.

If you’re a sports organization, athlete, or team seeking confidential, non-judgmental, tailored support to protect you or your athletes from gambling-related risk, we’d love to connect.

Great perspectives here.
It’s hard to ignore headlines about the NBA and gambling. But it’s easy to lose sight of the players – the fragile, human side of competing at the highest level of any sport.
The mental toll is tremendous. And it’s often pushed aside in the name of winning at any cost. Leaving athletes alone in a fight with their personal challenges.
That’s why player support services are so critical to athlete success – helping them win a battle that lives far beyond the stat sheet.
