The Case for Providing Professional Athletes Access to Child Psychology

How can child psychology help professional athletes?

Think for a moment about the pressures and challenges a professional athlete faces, such as injuries, potential trades, losses, underperformance, fear of losing playing time or getting released, negative media attention, etc.

Stressors affect not only the athlete but also the athlete’s family. While teams often provide athletes with access to sports psychologists and counselors, who is there to meet the emotional needs of an athlete’s child?

Let’s face the facts: now more than ever, children face significantly greater stress with school, friends, social media, sports, and family dynamics.

According to a 2016-2019 study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, children aged 3-17 years have been increasingly diagnosed with mental disorders. The 3-year research revealed children’s mental health prevalence rates:

* ADHD 9.8% (approximately 6.0 million)

*Anxiety 9.4% (approximately 5.8 million)

*Behavior problems 8.9% (approximately 5.5 million)

*Depression 4.4% (approximately 2.7 million)

As it relates to this study, there are two important points:

These statistics are only the reported cases. Many more children are suffering in silence.

Countless children who may be struggling emotionally fall below the standard for a mental disorder. Yet their challenges significantly impact their growth, development, and happiness.

The role of a parent is to raise well-adjusted, confident, and resilient children who can reach their human potential. Therefore, it is essential to provide children with the skills and resources necessary for successful, healthy, and happy lives.

The Benefits of Child Psychological Resources for Athletes and Their Families

Understanding the Unique Demands

Professional athletes lead highly demanding lives. The pressures of competition, rigorous training schedules, and constant travel can take a toll on the athletes and their families, including their children. Unlike many other professions, an athlete’s career trajectory often involves frequent relocations, long periods away from home, and the scrutiny of the public eye.

Family

Impact on Family Dynamics

For athletes who are parents, the demands of their careers can profoundly impact their relationships with their children. Children may struggle with the absence of a parent during essential milestones, such as birthdays or school events, leading to feelings of resentment or abandonment. Moreover, the unpredictable nature of sports careers can create uncertainty and instability within the family unit, affecting children’s emotional well-being.

The Role of Child Psychology

Child psychologists are trained to understand children’s unique developmental needs and provide strategies to support their emotional and psychological growth. Professional athletes and their families can benefit from expert guidance and support in navigating the challenges associated with their lifestyle by having access to child psychology services.

Supporting Children Through Transitions

One key role of child psychologists in professional sports is helping children cope with transitions, such as retirement, moving to a new city, or dealing with a parent’s extended absence due to training or competition. Child psychologists can help children express their feelings, develop coping mechanisms, and strengthen family bonds.

Psych

Promoting Mental Well-being

In addition to addressing specific challenges, child psychology services can also promote the overall mental well-being of professional athletes and their families. By providing a safe space for athletes and their children to discuss their emotions and concerns, child psychologists can help reduce stress, anxiety, and depression, ultimately contributing to healthier family dynamics and improved performance on the field.

Breaking the Stigma

Despite the growing awareness of the importance of mental health in sports, there is still a stigma surrounding seeking help, particularly when it comes to issues affecting family dynamics. Creating a culture of openness and vulnerability where athletes feel empowered to prioritize their family’s well-being destigmatizes the idea of seeking support.

Education and Awareness

Access to child psychology services can also educate athletes and their families about the importance of mental health. By normalizing discussions around mental well-being, athletes can create a supportive environment for their children to express themselves and seek help when needed.

Long-term Benefits

Investing in the mental health of athletes’ children can have long-term benefits for both the children and the athletes. By addressing psychological issues early on, children are more likely to develop into mentally resilient adults, which can positively impact their overall well-being and relationships later in life.

Happy Family

In conclusion, providing professional athletes with access to child psychology services is a proactive and essential investment in the well-being of their children. By addressing mental health needs early and effectively, athletes can support their children’s emotional development and help their children lead healthy and fulfilling lives. Access to child psychology services benefits individual families and promotes a broader cultural shift towards prioritizing mental health in the sports world and beyond.
